Design Process + Fees & Charges

The design process follows broadly the steps outlined below and is in line with the stages set out by the Society of Garden Designers:

Step One
Initial Visit
1

We will meet with the client at the site to establish the design brief, gaining an understanding of the issues the client wants addressed and the site constraints.

Following the visit, a written-up version of the brief will be provided to the client to confirm mutual understanding.

Step Two
Site Survey + Analysis
2

Straight-forward site surveys can be carried out by Green Genus Garden Design, but larger or more complex sites will require the services of a qualified surveyor along with the appropriate specialist equipment. We can commission this work on behalf of the client to ensure that the necessary information is provided.

Step Three
Concept Design
3

Following the site survey and analysis, a concept design will be produced. This will consist of an outline layout and a series of visuals (pictures/models) to allow the client to understand the proposed look and feel. Adjustments can be made at this stage to make the client comfortable with the proposals. Once this is agreed the design can move on to the next stage.

Step Four
Detailed Design
4

At this stage a full set of working drawings are produced from which the garden can be built.  This will include an overall Masterplan, a Planting Plan and a Specification, but may also include sections and elevations, a demolition plan if significant parts of the existing garden are being removed and detailed construction drawings of any key features.”

Step Five
Contract Administration
5

The client may have an existing gardener who will build the garden, or already have a preferred contractor, in which case this process will be relatively straight-forward.If not then we can help select a suitable landscaper and also monitor delivery of the contract to ensure it is in line with the approved design.

Step Six
Aftercare
6

We can provide a maintenance schedule for you, or your gardener, to keep your garden in the best possible condition going forward. We can also arrange a regular review of your garden (e.g., every 6 months, or a year) to check on progress and suggest further improvements.  It is, after all, a living space.

Service Options

However, it may be that you don’t want this full range of services. For example, you may not want a full re-design of the garden, but simply a Planting Plan for a refreshed look. You may wish only to employ Green Genus Garden Design to take things as far as the Detailed Design and you will manage matters thereafter yourself. There is no pressure to progress further than you require.

Fees & Charges

Each site and each client is unique and we offer a service tailored to meeting those unique requirements.  However, this does mean that it is not possible to set out a firm fee for the design work here, as it is highly dependent upon the nature of the work required.  For example, a garden consisting of a lawn surrounded by shrub borders is far less complex and thus a lower fee is applicable than a garden of the same size involving multiple changes in levels, water features, built structures, etc.

Initial Visit

The Initial Visit will be provided free within a 50 miles radius of Milton Keynes where we are based.  Beyond that a fee based on travel/over-night stay costs will be chargeable, but fully refundable if work progresses to the end of the detailed design phase.

Fee Proposal

When the written brief is provided following the initial visit a fee proposal will be included to get to the end of the concept design stage, as well as a broad-brush indication of possible further fees.  Then at the point the concept design is agreed a further fee proposal to the end of the job will be provided along with an estimate of the garden build work itself.  The cost of the garden build can only be known once a quote is received from the chosen contractor.  You will not be asked to commit to any phase of the work before understanding the likely costs.
