Project One

We had to pack a lot into this garden to meet the client requirements for both sunny and shady seating areas, a central lawn, an area to grow their own vegetables and floriferous borders.  There was also the challenge of constantly changing light conditions for much of the garden due to tall trees on two of the boundaries.

I am pleased to say that we managed to achieve all of this with a bit of style and all within a relatively low budget.  Gravel paths kept the mood relaxed and cost down, whilst the bounding clay pavers provided continuity with the brickwork from the house.  The style was delivered through a number of unique bespoke features.  A semicircular retaining wall and a radial pergola were constructed on site by the contractor, B&C landscaping.  I also designed a bespoke trellis to reflect the curves of the paths, delivered by The Garden Trellis Co.

Plants had to be carefully selected to meet the soil and various light conditions.  Geraniums tolerant of a wide range of conditions were used to stitch the whole design together, whilst other plants were selected to meet more specific conditions of the precise location.  The majority of the plants were supplied by Swallows Nursery.

Project Two

This project covered both front and back gardens, which were of quite different natures, the front being very open in contrast to the walled rear garden.  The client had mobility issues, so the challenge was to improve access to both house and garden.  The front garden had multiple utility access points to be negotiated, whilst in the rear the aim was to make level access on a gently sloping site.

A new path was added at the front to match the desire line, whilst stronger definition was given to the remaining areas.  At the rear decking was used to raise the outdoor floor level to that of the inside whilst still maintaining drainage.  This allowed bridging across to the central area of the garden in which the former lawn was replaced by a paved circular path and mixed borders.  Planting was chosen to facilitate periodic maintenance rather than constant regular intervention.  The garden was built by Alan Muxlow Gardens with plants being provided by Swallows Nursery and Spinney Nurseries

Project Three

A long narrow wedged shape front garden which was overgrown and neglected was the starting point for this project.  The client was particularly keen that the garden should support wildlife as well as being aesthetically pleasing.

We reused some of the paving slabs for a new entrance area and donated the rest to the local scout group.  As well as relaying the slabs the contractor, PJ Dolman Landscapes, repaired dilapidated walls and laid a winding gravel path with stepping stones leading to a stone circle feature.  Plants supplied by Spinney Nurseries were selected to be pollinator friendly and provide year round interest.  Some of the shrubs will take a while to mature, but even in the first year the garden was still buzzing with life.

Project Four

Historic Site in Surrey

This house and garden were once owned and lived in by Gertrude Jekyll and represents the start of a long and fruitful partnership between the famous garden designer and the architect Edwin Lutyens.

The design of the garden here aims not to be a recreation of Gertrude Jekyll’s original garden, but rather to draw inspiration from it and be in empathy, but a more modern interpretation. The layout of the garden draws significantly on the architecture of the house with its cut off corners.

Project Five

Front Garden in Milton Keynes

More car parking space was required for this maturing family as well as addressing a persistent problem with moss in the lawn.

Keeping the additional parking space away from the garage presented a natural opportunity to re-align the axis of the garden. Instead of fighting the moss in the lawn I decided to remove the lawn altogether and increase both the hard landscaping and planted borders to give a more obviously designed feel to the garden.
